San Juan County is made up of over 700 islands and reefs, only 176 are named and stay above high tide at all times. The islands are in the northern Puget Sound region, west of Washington’s northwestern coast and east of British Columbia’s Vancouver Island. The population of 15,800 residents exists largely on the county’s four largest islands: San Juan, Orcas, Lopez, and Shaw. These are the only islands in the county served by Washington ferries. San Juan County is one of the state’s smallest counties by population and is the smallest by land area.
The San Juan Islands are a well known tourist destination for a great deal of outdoor activities, including whale watching, kayaking, ziplining, fishing, boating, hiking, biking, and of course, exploring or relaxing on the beach. It is the only Washington county with no highways which contributes to the laid back, small town atmosphere the islands strive for.
