6 Fun and Family-Friendly Activities around Olympia

Looking for new activities in your neighborhood to entertain both the adults and children? If you live in the Olympia area, there are a multitude of great parks and recreational areas including walking and hiking paths to get everyone out into nature.

One of the most beautiful areas is right at the mouth of the Nisqually River where a Wildlife Refuge is home to many types of our feathered friends. Be sure and stop by in the summer evenings rather than in the heat of the day. Less congested pathways ensure that more of the local wildlife will be on view.

Another must-see spot is in the wooded and tranquil areas of Priest Point Park. The park is a popular spot for weddings or picnics and offers both gravel and wood pathways with amazing water views. The forest-like setting is home to many species of butterflies and other woodland creatures. There are also many old-growth trees as well as a beautiful rose garden within the park.

If you're looking for an activity that will allow those kids to expend some energy, stop by the Hands-On Museum for lots of touch activities for kids from age 2-8. The museum boasts a grocery area where kids can fill shopping carts with a variety of fun foods as well as a construction zone where they can try on hard hats and use a variety of pretend tools. From touch pools, to dress up areas to an imprint wall, kids will go crazy for the constant interaction offered by the museum's variety of subjects. Just outside, there is a plaza that has a wading area for those hot summer days. The museum is also open 7 days a week.

If you're in the mood for a more historical experience, don't miss the legislature building at the State Capitol. Before you even enter the building, stop by the stunning gardens right out front. Once inside there are free tours offered to take you back in time to granite walls, immense chandeliers and Presidential seals. The memorials and bronze statues beneath the dome ceilings are truly inspiring. Don't miss one of Olympia's finest representations of great architecture.

Needing a chance to relax and take a stroll? Check out Marathon Park which offers a stunning view of the Capitol building while you stroll a paved path by the water. Leisurely strolls are a must as running is not allowed along the path. If you're looking to clear your mind before heading back to the daily grind, you will find the park to be the perfect respite spot for a little rest and relaxation.

Another great experience is stopping by one of the Farmers Markets extraordinaire located at Lattin's Country Cider Mill and Farm. Not only can you buy some fresh fruit and vegetables, but there are baby goats to pet and ducks and other water fowl to see. Peacocks and turkeys round out the experience which boasts a working farm where one feels right at home.
